Of all my recipes, this one is requested more than all the others. And if I've given it to you in the past, check this out instead!! I've improved it!! I've been tweaking it for the past couple weeks, and I think it's just about perfect now. These rolls are so soft, amazing with soups, salads, and just by themselves! These are super easy to make vegan friendly, and the taste isn’t even compromised! There are some videos down at the bottom of the post for even better instruction.

Ingredients:

5 3/4 cup flour (if it's super humid outside, you may want to add a tablespoon or two)

2 cups water

1 egg (you can leave this out if you need a vegan option)

1/2 cup veg oil

1/2 cup sugar

2 1/2 tsp salt

*1 TBSP yeast

butter to brush on the top (optional)

*just a little side note on the yeast. Red Star is my favorite. I buy it in bulk and keep it in the freezer. I've never had a problem with it getting old.

Directions:

There's a couple ways you can do this. My favorite is using the bread maker on the dough cycle. I like doing this because I just dump everything in and come back to it after an hour and a half.

If you're using a bread maker- toss it all in and put it on the dough cycle. If you're using a mixer, put everything in the mixer and let it work with a dough hook for 30 minutes. Then let it rise for one hour.

When the dough is done rising, it's time to roll it out. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F. I don't worry about it being too thin. I like to cut the dough in a triangular-ish shape and roll them up and put them on a greased cooking sheet or glass pan (see our video at the bottom for more instruction). I use cooking spray to grease my pans to make it easy. If I have extra time, I'll let the rolls rise for another 30 minutes at this point. If not, when your oven is done preheating, pop the rolls in the oven. In my oven they cook perfectly in 17 minutes. Every oven is different, so it could be between 15-20 minutes depending on if your oven runs a bit hot or cool.

When they are done, pull them out to cool. I slide a butter knife or spatula under the rolls, just to loosen them up and prevent them from sticking to the baking sheet/pan. Then I like to brush the tops with butter (optional).

I use this recipe for so many different things: cinnamon rolls, pizza bites, pretzel rolls, bread bowls, fried scones, berry cream cheese bites, even modify it to make pitas. Even if you just want to dip these beauties in a soup, or slather it with some Nutella- they really are magical. Cozying up with a warm roll and a cup of hot chocolate is one of my favorite comfort snacks in the winter.

It's also fine using a Bosch Mixer or a Kitchen Aid instead of a bread maker. I love my Kitchen Aid, but it really works better for me when I'm making cookies, quick breads, frostings, etc. My sister in law and my mom both love their Bosch mixers.

FAQs

What is the meaning of dinner rolls? ›

Description. The dinner roll is a type of bread prepared into a small round loaf often served as a side to a meal. Dating back to ancient times, dinner rolls are named for their original purpose as an easily passed dinner food.

How long will dinner rolls stay fresh? ›

Commercially baked breads and rolls can be stored at room temperature for 2 to 4 days or 7 to 14 days in the refrigerator. Bread products retain their quality when stored in the freezer for 3 months. Any breads containing meat or hard cooked eggs must be refrigerated within 2 hours.

Can you refrigerate unbaked dinner rolls? ›

If you're only a day or two away from your party, you can also just refrigerate either the dough or the shaped rolls — they'll keep just fine without even needing to go to the freezer. Whichever method you end up using, three days in the fridge or a month in the freezer is about the maximum that I recommend.

What are the characteristics of dinner rolls? ›

While dinner rolls to a German or Italian mind might be crusty, have a chewy or dense texture, and be made with a flour other than white wheat, to an English-speaking mind, classic dinner rolls are puffy, have a soft crust and a soft crumb, a subtle, buttery flavour, and are made from white bread or all-purpose flour.

Why do they call them rolls? ›

Rolls can be found in many shapes, but when the dough is scaled out and formed, it is rolled into shape. Even challah rolls are first rolled into long strands before being knotted. How about jelly rolls or a buche de Noel? The name can refer to a method of forming, not just the final product.

Where do dinner rolls come from? ›

They were invented at the Parker House Hotel in Boston, during the 1870s. The story of their creation has several variations, but they all involve an angry pastry cook throwing unfinished rolls into the oven, which results in their dented appearance.

Can I freeze rolls before baking? ›

But I'm going to let you in on a baker's secret: Dinner rolls—even if the dough has yeast—are one of the easiest breads to make, freeze, and bake later. Dinner rolls can either be frozen as unbaked balls of dough, or you can bake, cool, and then freeze them to reheat later.

Can you leave dinner rolls out overnight? ›

While it's safe to keep many baked goods at room temperature, it depends on the item and should be taken on a case-by-case basis. For instance, breads and rolls can last up to four days at room temperature, but any bread with meat or hard-boiled eggs should be refrigerated within two hours, according to the USDA.

How do you reheat dinner rolls without drying them out? ›

Cover the rolls with a slightly damp, clean kitchen towel. Wrap the entire plate in a dry tea towel. Microwave until just warmed through, 30 to 45 seconds. The rolls should not be piping hot, or they will turn tough and chewy as they cool.

How do you keep dinner rolls fresh after baking? ›

Let the rolls cool completely on a cooling rack. Always remove rolls from the pan immediately after baking to prevent moisture buildup that can cause sogginess. Once cooled, place in an air tight container or ziplock bag.

Why did my dinner rolls turn out dry? ›

Too much flour makes dough too stiff to rise properly, creating a dry texture. A range of flour is always given in yeast bread recipes because flours vary in moisture content, reacting in different ways depending on the time of year, weather conditions, etc.

How do you keep dinner rolls warm after baking? ›

So here is an easy way to keep freshly baked rolls or other bread products hot from the oven warm on the table. Put some uncooked rice, a few cups or so, into a cloth sack — you can use a kitchen towel, a pillow case, even a clean sock — and microwave until it's warm to the touch, about 2-3 minutes.

Why are my dinner rolls bland? ›

Flat flavor in bread is almost always because of not enough salt. I agree with you that you don't have enough. About 2% of the flour weight. In your recipe with 5 cups of flour (600g) that would be just over 2tsp of table salt (12g).

What is the difference between a bun and a dinner roll? ›

Rolls are typically proofed and baked closer together for a softer, “pull apart” result. This makes them great for dipping or eating alongside other food. On the other hand, buns are proofed with space between them, which makes them crustier.

What is the meaning of bread roll? ›

A bread roll is a small, usually round or oblong individual loaf of bread served as a meal accompaniment (eaten plain or with butter). Rolls can be served and eaten whole or are also commonly cut and filled – the result of doing so is considered a sandwich in English.

What is the difference between Texas rolls and dinner rolls? ›

What is the difference between Texas Size rolls and Dinner Rolls? Texas Size rolls are 50% larger than our Dinner Rolls. The only difference is the roll size.
